answer to a quote on mental illness

“The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.” ~Aldous Huxley

well it’s close …. the premise invalidates its supposition: to wit, the defintion of normal is not necessarily mentally well, but a conformity to social norm. so ‘normal’ isn’t the opposite of mentally ill, mentally well is the opposite of crazy; and most of the time you have to go THROUGH the perils of insanity to get there. if not willing to risk the stability of your own mind, there is no gain to a foundation all your own. mental wellness is not something you are — it’s something you do in forging your own path. sometimes you land on your feet. sometimes you don’t. but every drop of crazy is worth every tear of alone.

  1. “…and most of the time you have to go THROUGH the perils of insanity to get there.: Boy, isn’t that the truth! I don’t know about you, but I have no desire to be what this society considers “normal”. It’s so…dumbed-down, unappealing, boring and…well, boring. 🙂

    1. yea, vanilla one-size-fits-all …………. if we were totally free to wear whatever we wanted and do our hair however we wanted and move however we wanted ……… i would fly SO high …………………………………………… all would eat my dust on the number of good ways i could create. as it is, i push the limits and note the faces ……

  2. and i’ll add to this – since are under greater scrutiny right now like a bug in a microscope:

might want to ask, out of all the killers and shooters and problems we’ve had, how many have been women? stats as they are, seem to show an exclusion. in that if you have “crazy” women, they are substantially less a danger than ‘crazy’ men.

but ask yourselves ………… how many women — what is the ratio of women to men in mental institutions? a ton more women locked up. where is the power base? because it doesn’t matter how ‘crazy ‘ or ‘normal’ — power will always — as in ALWAYS have the advantage to lock up not-power.

so more women are being locked away — more MEN are using an instrument of society to incapacitate the women that might or should be in positions to influence them or theirs. a little simplistic. but bottom line ……………. is it’s not crazy are looking for. it’s crazy MEN. the women are not the ones holding guns.

oh — but the men i’ve met in institutions … the ones who were really there, not shirkers or plants. they were the best of the lot. inventors, each. or at least trying.

Feedback always welcome
