well, for one thing – it was nothing like a Starbucks. i suppose we served tall Lattes. as far as i know, the first to do that. and i learned it from a French visitor to the Oxnard Shores beach.

row after row of beans in lucite containers. as assistant manager, it was my job to check the levels first thing when i entered the shop. if any were low, i noted the type of coffee and went in the back looking for the cussack with that name. you had to fill the bins from the top, and a door at the bottom made sure only the older beans were sold.

the espresso? we ground those up on site, flash brewed them. and me? i drank my 4 shots a day in the frozen slushie that i think they imported from China. heck if i know. but that stuff kept me going when nothing else would. playing on the oxnard piers, the nights were almost crazier than the days. we would run the pier — the entire length. passing boat after boat, and house after house on the channel.

and one time i danced. in my green dress, with my grandmother’s mother of pearl buttons sewed on by my own inexperienced hand. one time i DANCED. the band owner, he owns a piece i drew. or he did. i imagine dead or in jail by now. they don’t last long, the musicians. of course, around me the bad sort last even shorter.

my name is eileen brinker. and this is not a story about me. it’s not a story about a beach. or people. or dogs or kites. this is a story about Oxnard. the best damn place on earth. you BET TCHA. and she used to have sugar beets. oh yes … now the hills bleed shrinking springs and life looks bleak. so i left.

and came here. oxnard didn’t have onion fields, though that was close. the train went through there, and they packed the onions to ship out on the rigs. so anytime you went through the fields, headed toward five-points …….. you might smell onions. but they never grew them there. or rather, i grew one. at my grandmother’s. on the back porch. pretty plant. it’s not about layers. it’s about stinking long after you’re gone.

the first thing to greet you on any day in oxnard, was the smell of fish. it was like the entire ocean had died, and dumped its aftermath on your doorstep. what can i say? you held your nose on the way to the bus stop in the mornings. and you developed a keen hatred for fish. lol.

we had some times, those foggy mornings. because you see, our bus stop wasn’t yellow. oh no. our bus stops were blue. we road the city bus to school every day. you bet. and the yellow buses, those were for the longer trips. to the missions. the memorials of churches long-gone. up and down the california coast, slowly falling into less and less careful hands. the missions held a history like none other. i saved the best for last. as i stood, in the graveyard — looking over the complex design of keys and ways. i thought, you know what? it isn’t spilt milk. it’s tears that don’t belong in a battle you’re still fighting. that’s what i thought.

now those coffee beans, we sold them whole, by the pound. or you could ask to have them ground. i didn’t much like grinding them – hazzards in the workplace and all. besides, it’s impossible to clean a grinder between each run, so one bean is going to end up tasting like another. the leader of that band, he lived on a boat in the channel. came in every morning round about 7 right after open. would sit with his paper, sipping plain coffee out of a large cappochino mug.

“you want a refill?” i asked, holding the pot carefully in my best Flo pose. he looked up, a little angry.

“go away.”

i wasn’t hurt. or rather, i was but knew you weren’t supposed to be hurt if someone’s busy. preoccupied. so went about cleaning in the back and when i went back out, he was gone. hootie and blowfish was playing on the radio. i still can’t believe i had to let the other workers know that song was about heroin. that no one could see the plays being made. but Sandy? he had real California sound. a rumble. a grit. jazz and rock together in something — something that made it so dancing could BE.

and phillip? oh he could dance. that boy was a blond haired wonder, doing this sort of mimic of a cow-polk jump from foot to foot. he would dance with 4 or more of us girls at a time, and circle the floor as a cow-polk. as the biggest clown you’d ever see. ever see and cry-for. i loved him, knew he was no good. but sometimes you don’t care. living off of whatever he had, surfed on the beaches in the summer, and in the winter he would go up to Big Bear for the snow-boarding.

i swept the black and white tiles of the javashop. chairs on top of the tables, i smiled at the non-hootie songs i brought to the store, instead. guy out of florida, and i can’t remember his name right now. might say it got danced out of me. but Cartman knows who it is, because was his consolation prize at the worst aides benefit ever. that’s south park, for those who don’t know. times and tide. never discount a good bluff.

i counted out the money, put it into a roll, and stashed it in the back refrigerator. they weren’t walk-in. just row after row of steel doors. i’m not sure why she decided to keep the day’s earnings there, but mostly i never questioned a boss on the job. kinda doesn’t go under your own job-description. as i locked the doors, and walked out to my gray 280 ZX … i looked the car over. better late than never. i wanted one in highschool. this was a divorce, a kid, and about 20 jobs later.

and i was back in oxnard. or rather, i hadn’t left yet. hadn’t flown the coop. we got that beach hopping that summer. yes we did. i got in my car and cruised over the channel islands bridge, heading for my small room in a large home owned by a small lady. i let myself in, and quietly walked to the kitchen. took the bottle of kalua off the top of the fridge, and poured myself a drink. slowly padded to my room and shut the door. my room was right at the entrance. it wasn’t much. but honest wages for an honest roof over your head. couldn’t ask for more.

The Best Android Apps for Pandigital Nova

the good news is that making use of the Amazon app store did not prove to be an entire waste of time and money. my decision has been that the Pandigital Nova performs better WITHOUT the Amazon app store.

decided this in part because the Amazon app constantly runs in the background –and even if you kill the application– it starts again any time you use one of the apps installed through Amazon. i’m not saying it’s spyware, but Amazon appstore was using a little too much of MY resources to gather ITS data. electricity isn’t free, you know.

here is a list of apps that still work AFTER an uninstall of Amazon appstore:

Where’s my Water? (game)
Thunderstorm (live wallpaper)*
Circle Launcher (app launcher widget)*

ones that STOPPED working:

Double twist mediaplayer*
Angry Birds*
Angry Birds Seasons*
Angry Birds Rio*
Fruit Ninja*
Doodle Jump*
Tiki Golf
Multi-timer Pro*
Brightness settings

*purchased apps

after finding replacements for the no-longer-working apps, i am seeing better performance overall. which never know exactly WHAT was causing poor performance. no unusual memory usage was noted. however, it gets annoying having to constantly turn-off a Wifi signal due to the high battery usage.

here are replacement programs found:

Double twist mediaplayer*
———– switched out for Double twist .apk from freewarelovers.com

Angry Birds* ———– installed ad-supported version from GetJar
Angry Birds Seasons* ———– installed ad-supported version from GetJar
Angry Birds Rio* ———– installed ad-supported version from GetJar
Fruit Ninja* ———– installed ad-supported version from GetJar
Doodle Jump* ———– shared apk
Tiki Golf ———– other games from GetJar
Multi-timer Pro* ———– not replaced
Brightness settings ———– found exact same app at freewarelovers.com

the current set-up is working and needs very little tweaking. will put a list on bottom of blog, with current apps and notes on each one.

default sound-levels on the Nova seem too low and make it difficult to listen to your media. i found this solution:

http://www.apktops.com/volume-sound-boost-1-7-4.html

also installed Volume Control Plus (from the GetJar store). if you hit the “mute” button on Volume Control Plus, it mutes notification and ringer only. hard to say what part of which finally helped boost the sound, but results are kind of skittish. if you launch the regular sound-setting UI at all, will loose the boost and have to reinstall Volume+ and Volume Control Plus.

strike that! have found that any time you loose the sound boost, just go into settings>>>>applications>>>>>manage applications. select Volume+ from the list and then click on the button to clear data. then run Volume+ and reset the settings. for me, go into speaker settings, check both “Speaker Modifications” and “Virtual Room Effect” … then go to “Volume Level” and in the drop-down i select +13. that pops the volume right up to about twice what it was. you can leave a song on the whole time to see the difference. best when going to set the Volume+ setting, DO NOT HAVE NATIVE VOLUME MAXED …. set your volume to about half before you go to boost it.

Circle Launcher is one of those programs that is HIGHLY customizable. the more you dig in it, the more you find in tweaks to suit your needs. haven’t found any bugs in Circle Launcher, performance is flawless. something you don’t often find in an app launcher.

you might notice that cannot “size” your widgets on the Pandigital home screen. that MEANS that Pandigital is calling the shots. your tablet is calling the shots on how much space that widget will occupy. a clearly defined parameter that prevents exploitation and facilitates command performance OF those widgets. when i saw this first done with the Pandigital Novel — i thought “good. they plugged the hole in THAT dam.” how much functionality are you achieving by “sizing” widgets — in exchange for lowered performance and security? it never WAS worth the trade-off.

the email client is plain-text only. BAM — in one move solved the major security issue with most email clients. every bug and virus and nasty thing in email is contained within the html style code. for the first time in my computing history, i can USE an email client without winding up having to rewrite an OS as a result.

the 10.2 version of flashplayer is older and doesn’t work on all sites — but i am quite sure the selection of the older version is due to measured security within an Android system.

i can’t seem to get the built-in calendar to work — am not sure what it means by “exchange.” mostly use the native browser for internet, while keeping the Opera browser as a backup. my biggest concern is battery-drain and optimizing the Pandigital Nova for extended use when away from home.

now — the entire time i have sat here with the Pandigital Nova ON, WITH its Wifi going in the time it took to write this blog (start 11:05 and now 12:48) …. battery level has gone from 97% to 93% full.

if the shortcuts to GetJar don’t work, try entering the name of the App in their search box. it’s just i had to get those links using the desktop computer instead of the tablet.

am going to amend this entry. loaded more apps, and got to a state of poor function where a reset of the system was necessary (Settings >>>> Privacy >>>> Factory Data Reset).

this time i skipped through the set-up, and instead entered the Barnes and Noble account information and set up wifi connection AFTER the first launch of the system. no gmail account has been added.

much better performance now, less battery drain — and 3-4 changes. have NOT initiated the Email program nor the InTouch social program. have NOT installed the Advanced App Manager. have NOT installed ANY secondary media-program (video or music player).

and HAVE installed the Amazon Appstore ——- so am going to have to retract and consider the lowered performance as attributable to other factors. it will take several days in timing and noting battery-use, to determine what is possibly the relevant variable. will post the data when and if i find which change is the causal influence. i also reformatted my SD card using Windows without the the quick format.

where the native music player could NOT find any music on the SD BEFORE, it now has found and listed the entries from the SD card.

using the bookmark manager for the estrong filesystem, can place shortcuts to media files on your homepage. just long-click on the folder and select “create shortcut.”

1/22/2012

well so far it looks like the problem is in the task manager — doesn’t seem to matter what ‘brand’ — same type of power drain with using either Advanced Task Manager or Gemini Task Manager. might have to do with it keeping the wifi awake while in stand-by mode.

found a bug, but can’t reproduce-it. it was like Flashplayer was trying to load the applications manager. the regular android applications manager — had the circle going around like for youtube player, and then of course crashed. rebooting system fixed that — and i can’t seem to reproduce it. the norm is to have none (as in nada) wait to the app manager list. so something must have crashed the manager and left Flashplayer trying to load it.

will post an amended applications list once i get her tip-top.

5-12-2012 Update:

overall am finding Amazon .apk to be worthwhile. the newer version of amazon appstore seems to use less resources.

only media player am having success with is Meridian. i don’t like the gesture-controls, but there is a setting where can turn that off.

i use Opera Mobile for a browser, because it has a setting to go from mobile to desktop view. since some websites now deny services to mobile, having a browser that can fake it is a desktop can be useful. Mozilla Firefox also has desktop settings available as a plugin.

if you go into the estrong file browser …. at root under the folder system/app/ you will find the programs shipped with android.

i share between devices. like took the Youtube app from my phone, and put it on the Pandigital tablet. took the dictionary app from the tablet, and put it on my phone.

current list of apps:

************************** as can see, have many from the amazon store. they have been good with customer service when any problems.

right now am working with Calibre and downloading newspapers which are then uploaded to your device.

http://calibre-ebook.com/

i do 7 papers a day (but there are HUNDREDS!) …. it’s free and works fine w/Pandigital Nova. did have to adjust the destination settings for the newspaper epubs, so they would go on the PD_Universe drive under the eBooks folder there. (barnes and noble app does not pick up any titles under eBooks on the sdcard).

but this way i can get my local paper, as well as new york times and ones from egypt and china ….. and read them on the Pandigital Nova.  Calibre is awesome stuff ——- viva le open source!

Final list of functioning tablet:

Doodle Jump (anonymous source)
Angry Birds (anonymous source)
Beautiful Widgets (GetJar)
brightness setting (www.freewarelovers.com/android/)
Dolphin Browser HD (www.freewarelovers.com/android/)
Dolphin License (www.freewarelovers.com/android/)
ES Bookmark Manager (developer website)
ES File Explorer (update .apk borrowed from Coby android 4.0 tablet)
ES Task Manager (borrowed from Coby)
Overdrive Media Console (Local Library)
Quickoffice (borrowed from Motorolla Droid phone)
Video Player (1.0 plain player, on http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/)
Volume+ (developer website http://www.apktops.com/volume-sound-boost-1-7-4.html)
YouTube (borrowed from Mororolla Droid phone)

*************************************************

if volume booster stops working, can clear the cache for it under Manage Applications — then restart/reset. it pretty much stops working any time you restart the tablet. can also change the settings to manual Speaker Modifications.

you need sound-boost for the Nova, because standard setting on the volume is WAY too low. why they decide is more important to “save” the cheapy non-stereo speaker is beyond me. boost volume works well at level 13 — but then don’t keep it cranked all the way.

to “borrow” other apps from other android devices, use Estrong to go to root folder — (just keep hitting “UP” folder until can’t go anymore).
then open folder system/app ……….. copy all, and paste onto the SD card.

****************************************************************

the Nova works better WITHOUT a live wallpaper, using the still image instead.
if you keep the display dimmed downed to lowest on the “brightness setting” app ….. battery will last closer to 5-6 hours, instead of 2-3 hours.

put the Widget from ES Taskmanager on homescreen to end tasks in one tap.

and what is noteworthy …. is that the Nova is worth the money for the Dictionary app, and the Clock app alone. those you can take with you, to every android device. and a stand-alone dictionary MINUS all the ads and web-connections is the BEST thing for a writer to find. the clock app even installs on the Androi 4.0 and improves the native clock app to the Pandigital version — which has their slideshow, and a better display.

i don’t use “inTouch”
i don’t CONTINUE to use GetJar
i don’t use the native browser, because it doesn’t matter how many times you set it — manages to make its homepage “www.ereadingsource.com” no matter what you do. and that’s just a search-engine site working on the bottom (scrounger) which means not above doing what it can to you OR your machine! avoid avoid avoid

i don’t use the native weather — and use “Beautiful Widgets” for weather widgets. the basic “Video.apk” is a listing that uses your native video player to play videos. so it just fixes that problem with the native Video Player app in Nova — that doesn’t give a listing and only goes to your SDcard files.

i don’t use the cameras — really low res, and something went fracky w/ the camera software after owning the Nova for a year. wasn’t worth it to me to troubleshoot.

but really is/has been a good little tablet. thing about the Nova, is it’s solid state. so you don’t let that puppy go. American made. i’m loaning it to family — but puting all kinds of screen protectors and covering the case in craft foam. it will last you. this is one that won’t end up in the dumpster in five years.

remember that the more apps you have running on your tablet, the more energy that takes from your CPU. Angry Birds should be smooth and flawless — if it is not, use a task killer to exit programs are not using. (in Android, once an app is started it keeps running in the background unless ended) apps can also be stopped manually through the application manager.

Advanced Task Killer at freewarelovers.com

treat adding apps to your Nova like a dessert — not like a meal: you don’t hog down the whole cake. Android performs best if the user is selective in what apps are added. the Nova keeps a dual memory — so has 256mb to store apps, and then 256 reserved to run them. so it is programmed to NOT slow down from the over-stocking of apps. HOWEVER, any continually running program left on (especially ones like Opera, Youtube, etc.) will effect performance.

if you are unsure about adding apps, can always store the install files on your SD card and rotate them in as needed. will find there is a “Downloads” file on your SD card containing all the apps you have downloaded.

games can be memory-intensive. if more than 8 games are on your tablet, might want to think about which ones you like best and keep the others to install and use another time.

Tip: turning down screen brightness saves battery power.
barnes-and-noble-pandigital

Barnes and Noble the BEST ereader for several reasons

i have tested these folks about as far as you can test customer service.  and for me, customer service either makes or breaks.

have ordered their free magazine subscriptions, only to cancel them.  have sent upset/disgruntled emails, only to receive polite and positive response from a REAL person.  and when i asked to cancel a newspaper …

they responded that they would need the order number, etc.  at FIRST.   i let it lie — because my time is just as valuable as anyone else’s.  why should i go paging through emails looking for an order number?  within a week i received an apology and the cancellation with no problem.

now where they DIDN’T excel, was in the programming and design of the Nook reader.  i didn’t care for it —- was a little too heavy, screen too bright.  also the Nook had a security issue, that was my main reason for pulling the plug on that one.

yet i COULD NOT, in all fairness …. opt to go with a Kindle.  i am FOR open source software principals.  i work in Windows AND Linux (Ubuntu).  for those who don’t know how that works:

Barnes and Noble use the open (though drm for bought titles) format ——- called ePub.  you order a newspaper from them, and you can open it up in ANY software program running the ePub format, such as the open source Alkido.

with Kindle —- they have what is called a PROPRIETARY format for ALL of their books and ereader files.  you can ONLY open them in a Kindle — you have to BUY a Kindle and keep a Kindle and forever and ALWAYS be slave to your Kindle. would have to amend and say that you can use the Kindle app for android and other platforms. but every Kindle file downloaded only opens with Kindle.

as an example — say you bought a new sweater, and it is made purposely of a special material. no spots or stains can be removed from this material, unless you also buy and continually use a special soap made by the same manufacturer. is it ethical to make and sell those sweaters of this special material? there is no law that says you can’t. in fact we do — it’s called dry cleaning. all you need to sell something in the U.S. is good advertising, and the institution of boredom combined with expanding methods of suggestion. But that is how i see Kindle, and the harnessing of proprietary ereader formats. it is the dry-clean only sweater of the electronics’ world.

Barnes and Noble is the best choice for longevity, and anyone who is a serious reader.

and since i was not blown-over with the design of the Nook ……….. was delighted to find a different option in the Pandigital reader.  something a little lighter, a little less eye-ball-frying bright.  you can’t get much better than these two teaming up.  Pandigital really knows their software ……….. and although hackers have worked to duplicate it to root the Pandigital tablets, i have watched as this company has stayed one step ahead always on their game.

they do SUCH a nice job of the programming, that for the first time i am seeing Android as a viable OS rather than just a toy.

Since the making of this video, Pandigital has included Flash support in their update. (Flashplayer 10.2 native browser only)

doing a little research on the best deal for a Pandigital Nova – and am really feeling bad about what appears to be a smear campaign by Amazon. perhaps they didn’t want the Nova to take any thunder from their Kindle Fire.

there are little tells, here and there. for example, a larger-than-normal percentage of the consumer comments at Best Buy – state “I’m returning this and getting a Kindle.”

now, that wouldn’t be so odd …. except that the Pandigital in question is a NOOK READER. if you were to return it, the logical replacement would be a B&N Nook reader. who would be INVESTED in Nook and owning Nook books, saying they are now going to go buy a Kindle?

so that didn’t make sense —- even this blog is listed on search engines with the ONE positive thing i said about Kindle Fire, when i mostly talk on the characteristics of the Pandigital Nova. you have to wonder how far advertising companies will go these days.

in my research, i found tech reviews that were obviously skewed, from Cnet onward. all sell-outs. on a You Tube video attempting to say what an awful product Pandigital is – if you look in the comment area, the techs tear him apart and say he doesn’t know what he is talking-about. the app he pulls up on the reader is the Kindle app, rather than the built-in Nook! oh no he’s not getting a kick back from Kindle on that one – of course not. *sarcastic smirk inserted here*

a resistive screen is different, it’s supposed to be different. a plastic casing means it is lighter and distributes what weight it DOES have more evenly, for better reading. my smart phone is actually harder to hold up and read than than my Pandigital reader!

I have the Novel, and was looking at the Nova as a possible upgrade. looks like it has twice the RAM — 512 instead of 256. both processors are at 800 mhz — but seems the Nova processor has a little more get up and go. since it is running the Android 2.3…….. you could apply a hack to get the Android market. if are feeling brave, could even install the Amazon app market …. though after seeing their smear campaign, I would think twice.

not to be pedantic … but come on! when the scripts being offered in reviews AND customer comments are almost identical in wording. ? as a writer and avid reader, I remember that sort of thing. it clicks. and why I am writing this blog, is that when I went to research, there were too many damn clicks. Amazon is running a smear campaign and that just plain isn’t nice. it impedes REAL information on a real product for real consumers.

Pandigital Nova w/ Angry Birds Rio

and if Amazon themselves aren’t doing it, then some of their investors. I don’t know …

but anyway, I was able to drum up enough stats, despite the run around.

800 mhz processor

512 mb RAM

4 gigs internal memory, and up to 32 gigs more with microSD

Nook reader (membership to Barnes and Noble Nook necessary)

resistive touch screen

Android 2.3 (gingerbread)

4 hardwired buttons

front facing VGA camera

rear-facing 1.5 pixel camera

built in speaker and headphone jack

handles media formats MP3 and AAC for music, and H.264 (.Mp4) for video (basically same formats used in iPod)

is small enough that can fit it into a coat pocket. 7” screen (diagonal)

the Nova is a little heavier than the Novel …. 13.8 oz rather than 12 oz.

while the Super Nova has a 1.0 ghz processor (samsung) – it is also the larger 8” screen. so you are probably looking at similar response-times to the 800 mhz Nova. the Super Nova weighs 16.8 oz.

***********************************************************

priced on sale at Best Buy right now for $149 …. with prices likely to become even more attractive farther into the holiday season – the Pandigital Nova brings some very necessary competition to the eReader market.

PS: there is NOTHING that awesome about an “authorized” Android with Google Market. my smart phone is the most schizophrenic device I ever met —– the greater they are, the harder they fall.

google took an open source kernel in linux — and has worked to harness and enslave it for their increasing profits with Android: while linux is a piece of programming that was worked on and developed by those who are dedicated to open source software principals. that’s pretty bad ….. it’s like raiding the convent to stock your whore house with new dames. not that there’s anything wrong with that ….. but maybe there is.

maybe there’s a reason big boy on the block Microsoft stepped in to claim some of the patents on Android.

since Google can’t run the copyright angles on the OS – works to monopolize the software app market instead. getting every idiot and their brother’s uncle to write apps for them — once again, harnessing the element of open source to sell. that’s like getting a free hamburger meal from St. Marks, taking it across the street and selling it at McDondalds for half the price.

there are some things you don’t do. and while electronics and computer science are new to the field of ethics …. ethics will eventually arrive.

with the Nova, might be able to play more games, like Angry Birds. and I should be able with an Android 2.3, to get a Video app that will play Windows wmv and wma formats.

of course, could get the Kindle Fire for $199. but there is NO extended storage in the Kindle …. you are stuck streaming everything or using up very quickly the 8 gigs of internal memory. that’s the same storage space I have in my walkman MP3 player.

I like the idea of keeping all my media on-file. which is easily done on the Pandigital, where you can switch files from your computer to your eReader. if you are not constantly reading content from a server and using Wifi — that will save you on battery-life, also.

it’s kind of funny to see Kindle-Amazon worried ……. they came out with their $199 pre-holiday Kindle Fire debut. and following the ideology of set pricing that takes no supply-angle into account…………. are slamming up to the wall of competition. where any customers who DID order the Kindle Fire for the $199 – will become upset if that price drops at all in the near future.

mainly in that once they got the Kindle, find that it is an installment plan. you pay as you go: more, and more, and more …… they even brag about it on the Kindle Fire promo page: stream your favorite movies and music! go home and stream them on your TV. of course, they are counting on increasing pressures of DRM to ensure their market.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh …… we are already seeing eBooks at TOO HIGH a price. there is no reason for electronic data to cost more than a printed book! no investment of substance whatsoever in electronic data – rules of supply are moot. when they are arrogant enough to price eBooks out of the ballpark like that ……that is called cornering a market.

I really wish they all could just learn how to behave. try to remember American business ethics …. you know, the ones most ditched in the 60’s when they realized wolf man jack wasn’t real. make an honest dollar.

after all ….. we don’t care that you have shareholders rather than owners. dirty money is dirty money. wouldn’t you rather see yours made in the right way?

when you leave it up to the consumer …… and then woo them by making this or that popular. by exploiting ignorance when it comes to tech — well, who wants to do business with a crook?

and I’m like a total Amazon fan and shopper ….. so going to have to rethink that one now, too.

apps i was able to install on Pandigital Nova:

Amazon Store:

  • Angry Birds Seasons
  • Angry Birds Rio (just have to be careful shooting the yellow birds)
  • Fruit Ninja
  • Doodle Jump (fast! )
  • Double Twist video player
  • Gemini App Manager
  • Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper (awesome effects!)

freewarelovers.com:

  • Analog Clock collection
  • Battery widget
  • Digital Clock widget
  • Opera Mobile
  • YouTube
  • Adobe Flashplayer

the app store that comes with Nova was weird — it showed different search results from different browsers. maybe just recognizing the android system, but then the downloads just stopped working from GetJar altogether.

is fair to note i STILL can’t find any way to play WMV or WMA on the reader. even with programs like Double Twist that play it fine on my android smart phone. so am stuck having to convert files to MP4 ….which takes up more space for less res value. :(
update 12/13/2011:

owned the Nova now for several weeks. there are a couple bugs/workarounds worth noting:

  • with magazines through B&N — do NOT use the “Article View” feature. instead, double-tap magazine page to enlarge print — installing B&N for android helps with support programming.
  • Double Twist can be a little buggy on the Pandigital — to where have to reboot if it gets stuck (problem is with the ability to process consecutive commands.)
  • rear-facing video and still camera is very dark on default. requires manual adjustment of shutter speed.
  • many apps programmed to “contact the mothership” — causing extra battery drain when connected to Wifi. installing a task killer, like w/any android system — a must.
  • when playing most games, battery length 2-3 hours (eats up the juice pretty fast)
  • calendar function a “hook-up” to an already set calendar server (if you have one) rather than free-standing calendar program.
  • initiate front-facing camera through menu option in camera program only. (i don’t skype so couldn’t say on that)
  • chassis feels a little vulnerable on the Nova–where with Novel could fling it across the room. so recommend having a sleeve or case. (can even build one out of a real book)

if you ever get completely stuck, the Nova has a System Recovery similar to Windows …. under Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset. will put your tablet back to its original state.

and last thing i will say — when comes to a decision between Kindle Fire or the Pandigital Nova– is that the Pandigital is an excellent product, but Kindle Fire might work if the purchase is for a child or someone who is cybernetically-challenged. without a micro SD slot, your teenager will not be able to destroy a Kindle Fire as readily as they could a programmable android tablet. just remember that with a Kindle Fire, are looking at hosting most of your media on a remote server — requiring constant Wifi to access your own files. and the added cost of streaming and storing media is a factor that can change in price and availability at any time.

Snapshot-1-(12-13-2011-2-34

Pandigital Nova teams with Barnes and Noble to give Kindle Fire gas ….

i suppose i should explain my pissed-off attitude right before Christmas.  i did a blog on my new android tablet, and it has gotten quite a few hits.  and almost every bit of the blog is on the Pandigital Nova and i try to put some facts on the table, since all that i found when i researched it was the massive fallout from probable kickbacks of Kindle Fire.  so i’m trying to balance the thing, you know?  and what does google quote from my article?  a sentence used to cover all bases, where i say Kindle Fire MIGHT be the better option IF you are buying it for a child.  but they left off the “if for a child” part.  and i’m a tad upset.

turned my words into an instant advertisement for Kindle —– when i’m not even a Kindle person! i don’t BELIEVE in their proprietary format, and i use Barnes and Noble for my ereader. so yea …. this means war.

am debating about just taking the blog down ….. maybe i could see about reposting it a few times.

they say you can’t play in the rain without getting wet ……….is Google TRYING to ruin my Christmas?

13.8 oz rather than 12 oz.

while the Super Nova has a 1.0 ghz processor (samsung) – it is also the larger 8” screen.  so you are probably looking at similar response-times to the 800 mhz Nova.  the Super Nova weighs 16.8 oz.

priced on sale at Best Buy right now for $149 …. with prices likely to become even more attractive farther into the holiday season – the Pandigital Nova brings some very necessary competition to the eReader market.
